Taylor St. John

I am a travel and outdoors writer currently based in the Green Mountains of Vermont with more than a decade of experience writing for print and online publications. My words have appeared in HuffPost UK, Country Walking, Hipcamp, Horizon Guides, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Orkney.com, easyJet Traveller and more. I have also written about sustainability, the arts, health, education, food and wine for both business and traditional media outlets.

Along with freelancing, I currently serve as a communications associate for Aquatera Ltd, an environmental consultancy based in Scotland’s Orkney Islands.

After receiving my degree in journalism from the University of New Hampshire, I interned as a fact-checker at Washingtonian Magazine in D.C. Later, I worked as a researcher for a Montclair State University professor and political commentator before relocating abroad.

In the last ten years, my writing has revolved around the art of escaping. I have been lucky enough to live and work across New Zealand, Australia and Scotland where I’ve clocked in as fish monger, lift attendant, vineyard worker, housekeeper, waitress and pathfinder (just a few of two dozen job titles.) Along the way, I found my lifelong travel partner in the Adventure Capital of the World, cured my fear of large spiders in Australia, drove a car named Betsy Laser Beam, became fluent in Glaswegian and washed up on a tiny archipelago in the North Atlantic. All of these experiences have served as inspiration for my travel writing (and for a book project currently in the works.)

Beyond writing, I have enjoyed working in the outdoor recreation industry and hold a New Zealand National Certificate in Tourism, along with aerial lift certifications, from my time at Coronet Peak Ski Resort in Queenstown, New Zealand. Through my work with Macs Adventure, a self-guided walking and cycling company in Glasgow, I completed a winter mountain skills course and have trained as a pathfinder, writing route notes and recording tracks for several of Scotland’s national trails.

When not working, I hope to be found in the sea, on a good road trip, dancing, or visiting with family in New Jersey and Scotland.
